Phantom power is designed for an external power supply through the mic-cable to the microphone that produces a signal that can be considerably lower in level, hence the need for an external pre amplifier. A professioanal mic outputs its signal via three-pin XLR connector.
Simply, the phantom signal 48V DC is piggybacked on top of both AC signals on pin-2 and pin-3 via two resistors, without disturbance. The negative or "return path" to the DC supply is connected to pin-1.
A female XLR as mic input and a male XLR to feed the mic signal to the preamp with a suitable 48V DC power supply to make the positive and negative connections.
Applying phantom powered units doesn't require the presence of the internal battery and can be supplied by stable external phantom power.
